Art Born from Whimsy (And a Very Dumb Cat)

DumbyWorld is the creative playground of Ciara, a day-job academic, lifelong doodler, and crochet newcomer from California’s Central Valley who transformed the thoughts bouncing around in her head into art you can hug and stick everywhere. Her sidekick is Bugs, the “dumb cat,” who provides plenty of inspiration (and hairballs). Independent artists building this kind of community presence often find that local creative spaces, like the kind celebrated at the Maple Park Community, show how grassroots art scenes take root and grow.

From Screens to Softies

Ciara draws digitally using a Surface Pro 7 and Clip Studio Paint, but the magic doesn’t stop at pixels. Since early 2024, she has translated her illustrations into handmade crochet softies that capture her quirky characters in 3-D form. Independent craft and art businesses like DumbyWorld reflect a broader maker-economy trend that outlets like Forbes have highlighted as one of the fastest-growing segments of e-commerce. DumbyWorld also offers whimsical stickers, keychains, and collector sheets that bring her art into everyday spaces.

Art for Good: Pride, Community and Collectors

More than merch, DumbyWorld is about connection. In June 2025, 30% of profits from Pride-themed items go to support LGBTQ+ causes like the Trevor Project. Plus, new stockists in small indie shops (like Bookish in Modesto and Little Roots Toys in Sonora) bring the Dumby fam into local creative spaces.
